I Heart Boobies, Too!

The Fine Five - August 6, 2013

(1) Received a wonderful phone call from my friend Tamara Rosov this afternoon about her new job at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, which begins in early September. She's returning to Florida after around 20 years as an ER nurse, first in Philadelphia and for the longest time in Washington, D.C. Mazel tov!

(2) Tamara also offered my debate team and I a place to stay (with her, her husband, and their dog) when we are in town. I'm still not sure that 30+ of us can fit well in a 2,000-square-foot house ... and even if we could, the lineup for hot showers in the morning probably won't be optimal. But we do appreciate the offer!

(3) Comcast - or Xfinity, or whatever the fuck it's called these days - customer service is pathetic. I come home from working on my classroom and walking the mall, hit the shower, then decide to relax with a little HBO ... and there is no sound or video working. Comcast's phone lines offer nothing but a busy signal, indicating it's not just my TV. And it took nearly 45 minutes for a "live chat" support techie to respond.

Now, I understand things like this happen, but when it does, you'd think the company would record a message for its callers (OK, maybe it did, and I just can't get through to hear it) or post some sort of informational commentary on its web page (it's there, but the techie had to guide me through a maze to find info about an area service outage). Or even send out a goddamn mass email to your subscribers. (You know, use the actual communication services you provide to ... provide communication to your masses!) You'd think that ... but YOU'D BE WRONG!

Way to show you care about your customers there!

(4) But at least their internet is working. For now.

(5) Write-in candidates are garnering roughly 50% of the Detroit primary election mayoral vote? Damn ... when's the last time that happened? Residents are voting to pare a ballot with 16 mayoral candidates to two to face off in the November 5 general election. My bets are on former Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan and Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon to be the last two standing. (This doesn't mean I necessarily think they're good, or will solve Detroit's problems ... just that they will be the two who square off the next three months. And they have to be better than Kwame ... right? Right???

Stupid News of the Day

From Time Magazine via Education Week: "Your First-Grader Is Going to Be a High School Dropout" - What do Time Magazine and Education Week know about me that I don't know? And who the hell is the mama in this equation?

Weird News of the Day

From NBC Hardball Talk: "Magglio Ordonez is running for mayor on the socialist ticket" - funny, he doesn't look like Obama!

Video of the Day

My all-time best bowling score is a 247, so I can respect how difficult it is to get a perfect 300 game. Troy Walker's quest for perfection died a literal second early. Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga can probably sympathize ...
