Mark Knopfler: Philosopher

The Fine Five - August 16, 2013

(1) A huge "thank you" goes out to whoever it was in the past seven years or so that left a copy of The Breakfast Club in the classroom where I now teach. Yes, it has a few minor scratches, but it appears to be play without a problem. Life can be so cruel sometimes ...

(2) The good fortune doesn't seem to extend as far when trying to burn a copy of Oedipus the King, the 1984 TV movie starring Michael Pennington, Claire Bloom and Sir John Gielgud. I'm getting visuals, but not audio (it's a Windows Media File issue, apparently), which is strange, because it played perfectly well on my work computer a few years ago. I did find the link to the 12-part movie on YouTube, though, so if you want to watch the Sophocles masterpiece, click and enjoy! (The attached link leads to Part 1 ...)

(3) Hola, Palm Beach area debate coaches! We have a number of new coaches - and new programs - this year, and they are in need of varsity and/or alumni in the area (possibly attending FAU, Lynn, PBSC, PBAU, etc.) who can work with their students. I know Spanish River is looking for assistance Wednesdays after school, and several others may be interested in gleaning our debaters' wisdom and experience.

If you are a new coach looking for assistance, please let me know!

Veteran coaches - please address this with your varsity (and any alumni in the area you are aware of) to see if they can help. (Magic words, like "community service hours," can be quite beneficial!)

(4) Chilled at Jojo's Raw Bar & Grill with other Wellington High School faculty and staff after leaving the workplace for a few hours.

(5) Philosopher and musician Mark Knopfler once opined, "Sometimes, you're the windshield; sometimes, you're the bug." Tonight, the Detroit Tigers (more specifically, the Tigers' offense) were the bug, and the Kansas City Royals were the windshield that squashed them in a doubleheader, 2-1 and 3-0.

Weird News of the Day

From TC Palm: "'It's (breast) time, I'll take everything off,' in Fort Pierce!" - In case you were wondering, the use of 10 (intercourse) sets of (fornicating) parenthesis in a story of this length is a new world record. Parenthetically speaking, of course. And if you don't like it (physically impossible sexual act upon one's own being)!

Stupid News of the Day

From WAFB: "Police: Man paid prostitute with roll of quarters" - Dude, quarter rolls are supposed to be used to pay the coin-operated washers and dryers when doing your laundry!

Florida News of the Day

From South Florida Sun Sentinel: "'Report: Woman faked her own kidnapping, gave herself a self-inflicted eye bruise" - That was her (pathetically created and totally unbelievable) story and she was sticking to it.

Video of the Day

Discovered this video about a year ago, love the mashup (even if there's no inclusion of The Blues Brothers)!
