"Plus-2" says, "I ain't all bad."

The Fine Five - August 14, 2013

(1) Received a lovely letter from the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia thanking me for the donation of my 1997 Toyota RAV 4, to help fundraise in the fight to cure cancer. The FCCC grossed $750 from selling my former set of wheels in "an arm's length transaction between unrelated parties." All I hope is that the donation somehow leads to a cure to some form of cancer, if not cancer as a whole.

(2) Also received a lovely mailer from the Bloomfield Hills (Mich.) School District detailing a ton of end-of-the-year accolades at its high, middle and elementary schools, as well as start-of-the-new-year registration dates and other factoids. I'm glad to be on the mailing list; I just don't remember ever signing up for the mailing list.

(3) The School District of Palm Beach County has moved its computerized grade system to a web-based forum. GradeQuick is now a part of Edline online, which means I can do much more of the grade entering and retrieving from home, and it's a hell of a lot easier to access. It's even accessible on a Mac! Of course ... I can't access it on my MacBook, because it's so old (in computer terms) the software isn't able to work with the new system. But I can work it from my iPad, so that's cool ...

(4) The English 3 teachers at Wellington High School (all four of us) collaborated to fine-tune this year's syllabus. Outside reading consists of Kindred byOctavia Butler, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, and The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. Add this to our in-class reading of Arthur Miller's The Crucible, and it looks like another fine year of American Literature. (Can't wait to add William Faulkner's A Rose for Emily into the mix!)

(5) Wellington's faculty was shown several inspirational videos as part of its "back to school" faculty meeting yesterday. One of them was "Rita Pierson: Every kid needs a champion" ... and she hits the proverbial nail on the head, over and over again. "Kids don't learn from people they don't like;" truer words have never been spoken.
